How do you calculate forex profit or loss?

For a linear forex or CFD contract, gross P/L in the profit currency is the price change × contract size × lots, with the sign reversed for a sell trade. It is then converted into your account currency. Net P/L subtracts the entered round-trip commission and fixed costs, then adds the signed swap / financing adjustment.

Does this work for gold, indices and crypto?

Yes, for linear contracts and fixed tick value payouts. The gold preset uses 100 troy ounces per lot; index and crypto presets use an illustrative contract size of 1. These are examples, not universal broker specifications. Match contract size, profit currency, tick size and lot limits to your broker. Inverse crypto contracts and nonlinear products are not supported.

How are account currencies and conversion rates handled?

No conversion is needed if profit and account currencies match. For a standard forex pair with an account in its base currency, quote-currency P/L is converted using the reciprocal of the estimated execution exit price. For other combinations, enter the applicable profit-to-account conversion rate. Reverse quote entry is supported. The calculator has no live market feed; use your broker’s rate and conversion spread for the trade being modelled.

Are spread, commission and swap included?

Use executable entry and exit prices to reflect the spread. Enter round-trip commission per lot and any fixed fees separately, in account currency. Swap / financing is a total signed adjustment: a positive number is a credit; a negative number is a charge. All costs default to zero. Avoid entering the same charge twice. The optional slippage allowance adjusts the exit against the trade; set it to zero when reviewing actual fills.

Why does my trade size show an error?

The size must fit the broker’s minimum, maximum and lot increment. Entering units converts the quantity into lots using the contract size, then validates the same limits. The calculator does not silently round or resize your trade. Edit the size or broker settings to match the actual contract.

What does the account return percentage mean?

It is net P/L divided by the entered account balance / equity, multiplied by 100. It measures the result relative to that account amount. It is not a leveraged investment return or return on margin. Leave the optional balance blank to hide this metric.

How the profit calculator works

Compare an entry and exit price to see your estimated net profit or loss.

  1. Choose your instrument and account.Select a market, instrument and account currency. Preset prices are examples.
  2. Enter your position and prices.Set the trade size in lots or units, choose Buy or Sell, then enter your entry and exit prices. Changing the direction keeps your prices unchanged.
  3. Check the broker settings and costs.Match contract size, tick size, volume limits and profit currency to your broker. Add known commissions, fixed fees and signed financing. Enter any required conversion rate.
  4. Calculate and review.Click “Calculate profit / loss”. Gross P/L is the price result before costs. Net P/L subtracts entered fees and includes signed financing. The optional return % compares net P/L with your entered account balance.

No live prices or exchange rates are fetched. Use executable prices to reflect the spread. Estimates depend on your inputs. Inverse contracts, taxes, available margin, margin calls and liquidation are not modelled.
