How is forex margin calculated?

For the flat leverage method, margin in the pair’s base currency is lots × contract size ÷ leverage. A margin percentage applies that percentage to the base-currency position instead. Any broker multiplier is then applied, followed by conversion into account currency. The fixed-per-lot method starts from the broker’s final margin amount per lot in its specified currency.

Is margin my trading cost or maximum loss?

Margin is collateral your broker sets aside to support a position. Reserving it reduces free margin; it does not itself deduct the same amount from equity. Trading losses, spread, commission, financing and price changes can reduce equity separately. The required margin shown here is not a maximum-loss limit.

How are equity, used margin, free margin and margin level related?

Equity includes your account balance and floating profit or loss. Free margin is equity minus used margin. For this added trade, projected total used margin is the amount already used plus the new requirement. Projected margin level is equity ÷ projected total used margin × 100. These projections hold equity constant and exclude immediate spread, fees and market changes.

Why might my broker’s figure differ?

A broker can apply different leverage or margin rates by instrument, position size, account type or direction. It may use tiered exposure bands, hedging discounts, netting rules, portfolio calculations or different conversion prices. This calculator models an additional unhedged trade using a flat setting. Match your symbol specifications and confirm the final figure in your trading terminal.

How do currency conversions work?

Forex leverage and percentage calculations start in the pair’s base currency. When the account is in the quote currency, the entered pair price converts the margin. If margin is in the quote currency and the account is in the base currency, the reciprocal price is used. Other currency combinations require your broker’s conversion rate. An override is available when your broker uses a different rate from the entered pair price. No live rates are fetched.

Which leverage or margin percentage should I enter?

Enter the setting your broker applies to this specific instrument and position. For example, 1:100 corresponds to a 1% margin requirement before additional multipliers. The shortcut buttons are input conveniences, not recommendations or claims that those leverage levels are available to your account. The calculator supports leverage from 1:1 to 1:10,000 and margin percentages above zero up to 100%.

What does “fixed margin per lot” mean?

Enter your broker’s final required margin for one lot and its currency. That amount is multiplied by your lots and the optional broker multiplier, then converted into account currency. A raw MetaTrader “Initial margin” specification can still require leverage, margin coefficients or other adjustments. Use the final applicable amount; do not assume every raw initial-margin field is the finished per-lot requirement.

Does Buy or Sell change the margin?

The direction alone does not change a flat calculation at the same prices and settings. Your broker may use an ask, bid or mid price for the trade or conversion and may apply different direction-specific margin coefficients. Enter the relevant price and rate; use the broker multiplier if a separate adjustment is required.

Why does my trade size show an error?

The size must match your broker’s minimum lot size, maximum lot size and lot increment. If you enter base currency units, the calculator converts them into lots using the contract size and validates the same limits. It flags invalid sizes instead of silently resizing the position. Use the Custom forex pair option to enter a different base and quote currency.

Understand the requirement

How the margin calculator works

Estimate the collateral a new forex trade would require.

  1. Enter the pair and position.Select a forex pair, account currency and size in lots or base currency units. Enter the price your broker applies for the trade direction.
  2. Match your broker’s margin method.Choose leverage, a margin percentage or a final margin amount per lot. Broker specifications let you edit contract size, volume limits and an additional margin multiplier.
  3. Check the currency conversion.Margin starts in the base currency for leverage and percentage methods. Conversion uses the entered pair price where possible; otherwise provide your broker’s rate. A manual override is available.
  4. Add equity and calculate.Enter your current equity and existing used margin to see projected free margin and margin level after the new trade. Equity is held constant. Leave equity blank if you only want the required margin.

Margin is collateral, not your maximum loss. This is a flat-rate estimate for an additional, unhedged trade. Tiered, hedged or netted positions can have different requirements. No live prices or exchange rates are fetched.
